Biography of a Mummy

Biography of a Mummy X-rays reveal poles thrust up his spine, the poles dating from the Dark Ages. His lower jaw is missing, stolen and ground, perhaps, to a fine powder and sold to Chinese traders. The poles would have held him together, brittle toes and fingers broken as they stashed him back into...

Re: "Pity, pity, too late..."

I am using quotes for Beethoven talking and italics for his friend’s speech. If I used italics for both, it might be confusing.

Sloth

Sloth My mother-in-law says I have no more ambition "than a sloth on holiday." She sighs. "If only you were a sloth... then I'd only see you once a week—climbing down from your dreamy heights." She can't forgive me for carrying her only child off. She sneers at my clothes as if she were the CEO of P...

Monarch Butterflies

Monarch Butterflies Each year like butterflies setting off from Canada for Mexican forests, we too have survived rough periods with nothing but will and stamina for the chance to rest side by side without rancor, our hands touching like Monarch wings note: an old poem revised

Marry Me

Marry Me "The whole ballpark was cheering." What did you say? I asked. "I couldn't hear over the crowd a word he was saying but the cheering got me excited and I stood up jumping like crazy and my boyfriend thought I had said yes. Robert threw his arms around me and five years later we have three da...

"Pity, pity, too late..."

"Pity, pity, too late..." —Beethoven dying My friend lay dying in his bed. His breathing labored, like strong wind. “Pity, pity, too late,” he said “to reminisce. Applaud instead. The comedy’s near done, my friend.” My friend lay dying in his bed. “My one regret…I never wed. My work mattered. I woul...

Re: The End

You’re right about the dashed line. Maybe “My world crashed”...
It’s a villanelle, only with tetrameter lines.

Re: "kindred Spirits make guest appearances"

I really liked the first 3 stanzas best. I can identify with them, as probably most writers can. The caress line is too formal, and needs to feel more conversational, like S1 -S3. I would parallel more the love/research of Nicks and Keller. It’s a good subject. Enjoyed. Good to see your work again. ...

The End

v2: The End Our pastor swore The End was near. I closed my accounts and counted my cash. I went to the fridge, consoled a beer. Crows gathered in trees and darkened the air. Streets swam with marlin, sharks, and bass. Our pastor swore The End was near. We prayed. Black cats were everywhere. Memphis ...
