The Kettle Conundrum

only birds understand
the blunt-beaked guilt of a kettle,
listen to its shrillness,
and know that it cannot enumerate wings.

but the kettle understands
that its very presence allows water
not a moment of peace,
wings or not.

that’s why kettles in my verse
tend to lie face down in brown thicket
or black swamps,

while a bird flying from page 7 to 13
fills forests in-between.

Hi shriiram,

Interesting, with the phonetics of title words "Kettle Conundrum," my inner-ear hears also "kettledrum."

and I hear another image/phrase: heavy metal conundrum   :)

I read the poem as Peace is Freedom --

^^ " just like the white winged dove" to reference an image from the lyricist Stevie Nicks.

Formally, these 13 lines are similar to the 14 line sonnet - the artistic logic, volta(turning), and concluding couplet.

"while a bird flying from page 7 to 13
fills forests in-between."

^^ skillful the rhyming of 13 & in-between

illustrated re capitalizing & a few other suggestions:

Only birds understand
the blunt-beaked guilt of a kettle,
hear the shrillness of metal drum
and know it cannot enumerate wings.

But the kettle understands
its very presence allows water
not a moment of peace,
wings or not.

That’s why kettles in my verse
tend to lie facedown in brown thicket
or black swamps,

while a bird flying from page 7 to 13
fills forests in-between.

shriiram,

if you don't aren't already have a poem representing another,
would you please consider The Kettle Conundrum to represent the WB.

Please accept or decline in the thread @ Palaver: Upcoming June IBPC 2015:

I second your nomination of Sriiram's poem 'The Kettle Conundrum,'though I know it is not necessary.
