    plummeting into my back yard?
 
    There are better chances of being struck
    in a drive-by shooting

    than falling in love.
    What are the chances

    of lightning slicing my eucalyptus
    down the middle?

    Aren't there stories of men struck
    by lightning

    two or three times,
    surviving, like they have previous

    marriages, damaged
    but thriving?
 
    At least they've known love.
    I have only fantasies,

    as unsatisfying as gulping
    water with the scent of rotten eggs,

    my friends and neighbors
    drinking champagne.
