Fay Wray
Fay Wray
My career had detoured into macabre roles.
Finally I had signed on for a dramatic part.
I was duped, the film's script changed
when Carl heard the island's rumors.
Carl was determined to bring back
The Eighth Wonder of the World!
Hadn't he promised a prestigious part?
Here I was traipsing through a jungle
in a dress thin as moonlight.
Who would have guessed
that I would become famous,
but as a joke?
Every male ticket holder
in New York was sniggering
with his buddies--lewd jokes
about me and Kong
being passed around
like buckets of popcorn.
To this day I long for a man
big enough to take me seriously
--to treat me respectfully
as he carries me off
in his tender
grasp

Bob:
5 stars for finding playful and wistful new subject matter for a poem.
the poem helped me reconvene my drifting memories of the lady i remember as being King Kong's best friend.
and in her voice, just great. First person added to the immediacy and intimacy.
and this favorite line:
in a dress thin as moonlight.
To this day I long for a man
big enough to take me seriously
she acted in films for 57 years, the film public was as loyal to her as one of the most important and highly regarded figures of the century.

Internet:
On The 70th Annual Academy Awards (1998). Billy Crystal introduced a clip of her in King Kong (1933) and then came offstage and stood next to Miss Wray in the audience, and introduced her as the "Beauty who charmed the Beast, the Legendary Fay Wray". Miss Wray was completely caught off guard, appearing to have not even noticed that Crystal had moved near her when the lights were turned down for the clip from "King Kong", then rose from her seat to rapturous applause and waved.

Hi Bob,
another biographical persona-poem - your forté
not just in the role Ann Darrow; but moreover in the life of Fay Wray herself:
To this day I long for a man
big enough to take me seriously
--to treat me respectfully
as he carries me off
in his tender
grasp
workshop suggest this passage:
" Every male ticket holder
in New York was sniggering
with his buddies--lewd jokes
about me and Kong
being passed around
like buckets of popcorn. "
^^recast as -
Every male ticket holder
in New York was sniggering
about the beauty with the beast --
locker-room jokes
being passed around
like buckets of popcorn.
Do you know of Mabel Normand - song as biography -
