Beethoven Plays for Mozart

It was to be another night
spent listening to music

in a salon:
the free food and champagne

were as much of a draw
as the musicians.

A stout young man strode
to the fortepiano.

I hoped his playing
would be more attractive

than his unshaven, pockmarked face.
He glanced at me from under

his bushy eyebrows, his hands
the size of a brick worker's

hovering over the keyboard.
I didn't expect much.

There were many talented pianists
in Vienna, ones who didn't look

like they had slept overnight
in a park.

Finished playing, he stood up,
his cleft chin held high.

Who was that young man?
Constanze asked. "Someone who will make

a name in this world,
and without having to lick the ass

of every nobleman in Vienna."
Another pianist sat down to play,

the wild man who had just left
quickly forgotten.

Bob---

the subject matter so original, grabbed me immediately and the poem delivered.

this series of lines just great:

There were many talented pianists
in Vienna, ones who didn't look

like they had slept overnight
in a park.

only thing i wondered, would you want to mention a chaffing dish of meat snacks, something very brief in that direction.

great poem, such creative thinking.
