celebrating a 53rd anniversary
Sunday December 9th 1965
I just turned 8 my little sister 6
and Charles Schulz' comic strip cast is set
hoping the premiere to be a huge hit
but the bah humbug in marketing predicts
disaster for A Charlie Brown Christmas
"Child actors voicing the characters
no laugh track
a never-green runt tree
a jazz score
and a depressed lead character
all spell doom"
However that evening with children
voicing the characters
and since real laughter can't be canned anyway
jazz making the score
off the charts already
yet for a grand finale
as that depressed lead character
(with a little help from faithful friends
Linus encouraging with Luke)
rises above the occasion soaring
higher than the tallest holiday tree
revealing in satellites what Christmas truly is all about
the film debut of the all-star Peanut ensemble
like the First Noël has arrived
appearing through the airwaves an instant classic
forever-green like love at first tele vision
broadcasting globally each yuletide since
bringing the good news to us all every one

Thanks brother Bob
for your kind words
and a possible direction for this selection
an occasional poem must rise above the occasion

I read this Michael and think it is the final version, well thought out, though I don't get it fully;I will when poets start commenting.

Hi Siva
Thanks for reading & commenting.
The unusual choices that were assumed to fail the production, instead were the production values in service to the perennial success of the classic.
^^ and actually that observation is what moved me to write this poem
dark turned out to be the source of light
from depressed to elevated, as symbolized by the spirit of Charlie Brown in the narrative itself
and this epiphany at the darkest time of the year, like the Nativity

Re: celebrating a 53rd anniversary
A poet-reader has observed the detail of "The Tree!"
Thus, I have put a tree up in the poem.
Is this indeed a poem in need of a tree?
If so, have I planted it in a space healthy to the evolution of the poem?
Thanks,

Re: celebrating a 53rd anniversary
Thanks, Siva,
for your attention to this poem.
I'm considering recasting
"rises above the occasion soaring
higher than the tallest holiday tree
revealing in satellites what Christmas truly is all about"
to
rises above the occasion soaring
higher than the Rockefeller tree
revealing in satellites what Christmas truly is all about
^^ The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is, if not the tallest, definitely one of the tallest;
and with casting this fellow American icon brings a specification to the image.
Happy New Year
