Noisy Mornings

Noisy Mornings

When I wake in the morning it's too quiet. My wife
is lying next to me, asleep.
The radio is silent
and I enjoy the rolling thunder
of the approaching garbage truck
when it rounds the corner.

Lids are clanged and cans being thrown aside
when my radio shrieks.
I squash its hysteria
and the cat jumps onto my hi-hats,
and it's like a drawer full of silverware
is being shaken out
onto the floor. God I love
the sound of the world shifting
into another gear...
My wife throws aside
the blanket. "I'm late,"
she sighs, seventy years behind her
and the future approaching us head on
like a truck on a one way road, a rack
of bright lights atop its hood,
its horns blaring to get
the hell out of its
way

For some reason when I read this the first time, I shifted gears in a beautiful way when I read "God I love/the sound of the world shifting/into another gear". Good poem, seems a little different for you, simpler in a good way.

Enjoyed Bob.
Life in the morning. The garbage truck and the cat make noise in the quiet morning.
Love these lines especially,

"I'm late,"
she sighs, seventy years behind her
and the future approaching us head on.

Hi Bob,

a boisterous take on the aubade

The lines Billy noted:

" . . . God I love
the sound of the world shifting
into another gear..."

^^ recalls to me Hopkins' "God's Grandeur":

"The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil"

and too the preceding auditory image:

"and it's like a drawer full of silverware
is being shaken out
onto the floor."

The trucking imagery continues the hopkinsesque, but keeping it contemporary & Bob Bradshaw.

workshop share - the last as:

its horns blaring:
get the hell out of its way

Love this, Bob

When I wake in the morning it's too quiet. My wife
is lying next to me, asleep.
The radio is silent

I'm not a morning person myself and this scenario is much like our house.
