Covid-19

Covid-19

Maybe it was a hoax,
this viral storm from China
alarmists were predicting.

Or maybe the virus was drifting
across our borders, silently
like the incendiary balloons
set aloft by the Japanese

in 1945, which rode high altitude winds—
out of our sight—falling
harmlessly onto rocky slopes
and empty spaces.

But after the President assured us
the virus was contained,
and would vanish with spring
“like a miracle”

I went back about my business.
I met friends in bars and stadiums.

Yesterday I woke up coughing
…two, three times.
Within an hour that cough
ignited a burning throat,

a hot spot of fever.
Having watched patients dying on the news
I knew it could spread like flames
through a summer hay field.

Sleep used to calm me,
like the hands of a masseuse.

Now in dreams I gaze up
from a field of dry grass
seeing a night sky crowded

with incendiary balloons,
houses everywhere ablaze.
