Her Heart was a Taxi Speeding Out of Town

Her Heart was a Taxi Speeding Out of Town

Inheriting a gold mine
wasn't better than the day
I met Janie.

Even when we had no money
we never squabbled--
Janie as upbeat as mid-summer.

Yet overnight things changed...why?
Beneath the surface
a world of permafrost formed.

What the hell....Janie looked up,
solemnly like a teacher
grading a failed final

as I walked in,
her suitcase laid open:
lace panties, bras, a spring wardrobe.

My pulse raced, a cup of coffee
trembling on a table's edge,
the L-Train rattling past.

Her heart was a taxi
speeding out of town.
Once she crossed the city line

she wouldn't turn back.
I grappled for reasons
we should stay together,

my hopes jackrabbits
on the run. Janie
and her suitcase at the front door.

Overnight my future
had emptied, a gold rush town
after the assayer's office
closes down.

A well worked poem and there is a balance between the first half and the second half. Reads well. Lots of nice usages and the ending is perfect.Sorry I missed this .
