At Black Balsam, I make six thousand feet;
this is where the Cherokee say God
lives in a cave with his wife, dances

naked around a fire until there's a vision.
Whatever he sees, he paints on the walls
and it becomes the future.

When I was a kid, I saw lightning
form below, storm cloud moving
through the valley like a black fish,

the dispensation of rain and life,
storm and fire, darkness and thunder.
God cutting a rug with his sweetie.
