Women Astronauts Leave a Dying Planet
There weren't women on the planet,
and we weren't obliged to play mothers
and lovers to a populace
of nearly nude men, filthy rags
sheathing their penises.
Others were naked, like caterpillars
with bristling hairs. Was it surprising
they only ate and napped?
They were lonely creatures, and sure,
we wanted to save them
but we cringed thinking
of embracing them. More and more
we asked ourselves, Why
get their hopes up?
Instead we gave them Dish TV
with 24 hours sports channels.
What primate with a remote
needs a woman-- except
to save its species? We rushed
to leave when they offered us
wilting bouquets of ragweed
along with marriage.
Fated to vanish
like Old World apes,
the men lifted their eyes
and pulled at their groins
as our ship launched. "Ah,"
we asked, "How could anyone
blame us for not saving their species?

Wonderful read. Stunning last line.
The opening lines tell it all
There weren't women on the planet,
and we weren't obliged to play mothers
and lovers to a populace
of nearly nude men,
and the humour in these lines
Why
get their hopes up?
Instead we gave them Dish TV
with 24 hours sports channels.

Much to like, and as sardonic as it is, the reality of it is damn close. A good piece

Bob,
In a collection of your poetry, I see your King Kong poem placed before or after this "womanaut" one.
(Womenauts Leave a Dying Planet) as title?
Could it be a time for or a call for a neologism?
Without strictly categorizing your poem, I read & admire it as feminist without the political - more like the need for & need to respect the female principle.
Contemporary allegorical satire(gender satire), in the of Swift's GT.
I had always heard: "Behind every good man is a good woman." In my years, I observed to believe:
Beside every good man is the right woman :
Beside every good woman is the right man.
A right one for each. Cosmos nauts all leaving a dead planet. What really happens on earth doesn't stay on earth - the heart is not earthbound. From maternity to Eternity.
^^ Bob, your poem has led me to make this joyful noise - a Language poem(a LangPo), perhaps - this early Monday AM ( Thx)
Bob, I believe your poem is pub ready & worthy;
and currently resides on the short-list for the upcoming January IBPC 2021,
with your permission of course
