Upcoming September IBPC 2018:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 29 Aug 2018, 09:45

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

For Me it's:

1. Ken's: After the Beasts (suggest line length changes)

2. Bob's: Angel Island (1933) [suggest shorter title]

And thank you Bob for the nod, I accept the nomination.

3/the poem is mine

4/and is an unpublished work

5/and that I am not representing in the current IBPC

Chinese Immigrant, Stuck on Angel Island, 1933

Every afternoon Jin Ching lay on a bunk
like a prisoner awaiting a court's decision.
He had spent his life savings
acquiring a "paper daughter",
documents detailing a villager's daughter
that he could claim as his...

Would the immigration officials
believe she looked like him--
with his moon face?

The inspectors, as poker faced as toads,
longed to trip him up.
Was China one wrong answer away?

He stared at the ceiling, recalling
details of his "daughter",
learned from papers
he had tossed into the sea as his ship
approached San Francisco Bay:
her height, her birthmark
above the cleft in her chin,
her baby's lucky name,
Huan Yue.

Oh, to think he was so close,
that he could dive into the bay's lap
and swim to San Francisco
if only he could reach
the island's edge, seen
from his barrack's barred window.

Would the officials' questions
upend everything, his heart capsizing
like a paper sailboat overwhelmed
by choppy waves?
What was the street his "daughter" lived on,
the name of the grocery
where she bought dumplings
and roast duck?

He looked out the window, the Pacific
squeezed into a corner,
and thought of the Jingwei bird,
how it spent its life trying
to fill the sea up, dropping pebbles
from its beak...

If he was sent back to China,
he would cobble money together
and buy another passage, next time
purchasing a paper son.
Surely strangers with hearts
couldn't deny him forever
from becoming American,
anymore than he could fill in
that damn ocean that kept
coming between them

Renegade Relapse

Nine months clean
and sober. I find myself
at the Alamo bar,
fistful of Tequila.

One drink leads to another
and soon, Santayana's army
is marching in my head.

The dark-eyed beauty
in the corner with an outlaw
smile, who's half my age,
matches me shot for shot.

Tuesday, my AA friends will
welcome me with knowing
smiles and warm hugs:

White chip, first step,
Serenity Prayer,
One day at a time.

Tonight I am Pancho Villa
come down from the hills
to shoot up the town,

plunder her breasts,
knot my fingers in her hair,
carry her off on horse back

race toward the border
reins clenched in my teeth,
worm in my belly.

Thank you for the reminder Ken.

I have alread accepted the nomination for my sea shanty a few days ago.

As understand the rules, we are not expected to post poems until the final
call by Michael. Only the final three are to be posted.

And thank you for the nomination Ken,
Dale I have chosen the sea story for this month, still working
on the Christmas story, but thank you.

Stretto di Messina

S.S. Salacia races through the strait
that stretches from Tyrrenia to the Ionian Sea.
From Punto del Faro to Punta Pezzo
to meet the strong currents and whirlpool
of Scylla and Charybdis.

Its 30 000 tons tilt to cope with the curve
of the plot, it is eight bells, a storm erupts
with a sonic boom of forked lightning
and illuminates the cliffs. Lights twinkle
at Messina on the northern shore, an invite
to supper, a safe haven.

The condensers groan, the generators
falter, the vacuum has dropped ten inches.
We remove the condenser doors,
a bed of oysters have settled
between the tubes, we party and feast
on them with cruise women the night through.

A calm sea at dawn, Bibesia content,
Erotes sated from the steamy night.

Does Upcoming September mean poems posted in September
to be included in the IBPC in October,

I get confused.
