Upcoming September IBPC 2017:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 28 Aug 2017, 19:37

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks,

Michael (MV)

Strike 1. and 3. from my original proposal.
In the interest of surfacing to a last three.
I altered it again since Siva has already accepted a nomination,
apologies for making it so oconfusing

1a. I second Bernie's Wild Beasts

2a. I propose Siva's A Fistful of Amargil

3a. I second Billy's Lest w Forget the Dogs Man.

1. Bernie's: Hiroshima Mon Amour.

2. Siva's A Fistful of Amargil.

3. Meenas': Creation Sustains

Bernard Henrie

my original work. the poem is not published or appearing elsewhere.

mojave216bernard@aol.com

Wild Beasts

Rain cleans the casino windows
bright as a yellow tiger. The night
quiet as a purse thief.

A girl lights a Gauloise, she walks
the boulevard naked under a raincoat
and a the wide brim of an ostrich hat.

The liturgical night comes for me.
Streetlights hum under their breath.
Thinning streets, empty, alabaster air.

Tomorrow I'll clear out, take that job
with the Tribune, a weather report
says I've seen the last of you.

Thanks, Bernie

Although the final 3 have not yet been selected, if indeed Wild Beasts is selected, then all the needed info is here,

except in the spirit of clarification - by "or appearing elsewhere" do you mean not representing any other board.

Please confirm that by rephrasing.

Thanks Bernie,

Michael (MV)

I accept Frank's nomination of 'A Fistful of Amargil.'
Siva.
My mail id is sivakamivelliangiri@gmail.com and I am not representing any other board with this poem.'A Fistful of Amargil.'
is my original unpublished poem.

Siva

A Fistful of Amargil

In this house I had graduated to two rooms
a study in the front, eight by eight that let in
the smell that burst out of pineapples ripening.

The other was a sleeping room on the terrace,
first time first floor, with a balcony
the sky a half hemisphere.

For a minor brabble Amma made her umpteenth
attempt to frighten us; it was when she sobbed
into the phone I called for a taxi.

And then to the Medical College Hospital
where we sat through the preliminaries, and all of us
gave our blood waiting for her to recuperate.

Foot Note
Amargil-sleeping pills

Here's my poem in case it's chosen. It's my original work, unpublished. Not representing any other board.
Billy Howell-Sinnard
bhowellsinnard@gmail.com

lest we forget the dogs, man

“The barking of dogs
is loud on every side:
Where is the lion
of the forest of Thy might,
O Chastiser of the worlds?” 1

listen, man
the dogs are still barking
not the dogs of my childhood, man
I’m a child of the tube
not the fallopian tube, man
the cathode ray tube
black and white, then color
man but it was all white
on the screen

until the day of the dogs, man
not Rin Tin Tin, not Lassie
come to rescue me

the snarling dogs
spittle of hatred
dripping from their jowls
you know what I mean man

you wonderin’
why I’m sayin’ man
so much

everybody was "man"
in those days

hey, man, how you doin’
hey, man, it’s cool, man
man, that’s righteous

I got a theory about that, man
you listenin’, man

THE MAN
didn't exist anymore
we all were the man
like the democratic man of Whitman

but who’s
the real man, gentlemen?
"the women"

the Holy Leafs
on the Tree of Life
that stands in the middle
of the New Jerusalem

they will be
for the healing of the nations

"Ere long the days shall come
when the men
addressing the women, shall say:
‘Blessed are ye! Blessed are ye!
Verily ye are worthy of every gift.
Verily ye deserve to adorn your heads
with the crown of everlasting glory,
because in sciences and arts,
in virtues and perfections
ye shall become equal to man,
and as regards tenderness of heart
and the abundance of mercy
and sympathy
ye are superior’." 2

Yeah, man, the women

But I was a child of the tube
the perfect white family
Father Knows Best
Leave It To Beaver
Roy Rogers
Superman
the American dream
justice for all, man
but who were the all?

I hear the dogs barking
in the distance, man
do you hear them?

the same little men
holding the leashes, man
fear dripping
from their sunburnt foreheads
white bellies hanging over
black belts
their eyes hidden behind sunglasses
their smiles more vicious
than the growls
of the dumb animals
inbred to kill and maim
what they didn’t understand

that day it all changed, man
I was no longer a child
hiding under my desk
with my cigar box
survival kit beside me
believing I would live
through a megaton explosion
under a mushroom cloud

there they were
on my black and white screen

people just wanting
to sit in the first open seat
after a hard day’s work

people tired of holding their water
until they could find
the right restroom

people thirsty
lookin’ for a drink of water
wantin’ a meal
from the same place they worked, man

and there were the dogs
snarling, thrashing at the leash
and those vicious smiles
like Lennon sang, man
"smile as you kill"

at the end of those leashes
the little men’s
ignorance and hatred
that they were dying to let go of
their fear turned on others

but where are the dogs, man
I hear them in the distance
in memory

they gotta hide now, man
but that breeds dyin’
not fast enough, man
change is never fast enough
ask the Freedom Riders
they know about change
and what it takes, man

“lo! certain doves of holiness
were sore tried within the claws
of the dogs of earth” 3

it takes courage, man
patience and perseverance
it takes prayer, man
it takes faith
and that’s love, man

love is faster
than a speeding bullet
more powerful
than a locomotive
able to leap
hatred and prejudice
in one bound

Superman couldn’t do that, man

we need a shot of love
as Dylan sang
to cure this disease, man
we need to vaccinate
our children with love
so they don't get infected

we're carriers and sometimes
don't know it, man
we gotta search our hearts
for the sleeping dogs
of prejudice

those old hounds
don't know what to do
their tails between their legs

maybe they'll realize
what their purpose was
before all that inbreeding
of ignorance and fear
was done to them

they were meant to be
men's best friends

the world needs
an example
cuz all we got
is that cathode ray tube
I mean flat screen HD
we can see the blood
today I couldn’t see
back then
and it’s still flowing

we don’t need anymore
trained dogs of prejudice
and hate

lest we forget the dogs, man
let's move on
let's be what we want
the world to be, man

“Say: Never will the barking of dogs
deter the Nightingale
from warbling its melodies.” 4
