Upcoming July IBPC 2018:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 29 Jun 2018, 10:58

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of January, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

I accept Ken's nomination at: 09:28 on the 27 Jun 2018,

in the thread for my poem: Tribute from a Wooden Hut

In case it is selected to represent the board

ieuan ap hywel
ieuanaphywel@aol.com
my original work
it is not currently representing any other forum
it hasn't been published

Tribute from a Wooden Hut

I was here on the cliff at glan-y-mor, his reverie.
Below, the boathouse, washed a pastel shade of lemon,
doused by sea mists of the Afan Taf that meander

into Carmarthen Bay. He sat and wrote here, window
open to the sea across the marsh from Black Scar,
the farm at Pentowyn, and Craig Ddu - Black Rock.

Lazy days, sun struck in summer, a flagon of bitter.
an empty bottle: his ty bach, when full he watered
the bushes. A little sleep at noon and when the sun

sat near the horizon over the Celtic sea it was time
for tea. Welcomed visitors: a sea breeze to waft
the heat away and Vernon who came to gaze

on his Arthur, a warrior of words, who wielded
a pen as cleverly as the sword. To sit and read,
to listen to the sedge warbler's call, an infinite

variety of series of ratchet trills and warbled
peeps. No one warbler's call the same, too
complex, far beyond any composer's grasp.

This is where he watched little boats bob, wind
waving reeds, lovers entwine, Polly Garter, and
Gossamer Beynon from Llareggub. He could see

Captain Cat pull in lobster pots, listen to the terror
in his dreams. He liked to get away from her-indoors,
the sudden fury of her fists, her insatiable demands.

No Blodeuwedd she, no dainty flower. A passing
local could serve, she danced on a yellow shore
showing off her all, her twmpath her wares.

R. S. Thomas said of Vernon that coins rattling on
the bank counter were to him like the splashing of
the waves at Ginst Point. Robert Graves spoke of him,

as a man with Hywl, and yet he spoke no Welsh.
But the hywl is there, see it shine in: Rage, Rage
against the Dying of the Light. We grieve with him

for the loss of a father. Fame had reached out to hold
him in it's fierce grasp, sad that asthma, and morphine
sulphate administered by an inept physician took him

from us. Remember now, the fag that hung from his pout,
poems that trill like the sedge warbler's call, soak in those
dreams of his lush women, bard of the bards and Laugharne.

Puffins

Who but a birder
could love
a bird short and stocky
with an absurdly
large, orange
snozz?

Yet there’s something
familiar about puffins
as their beaks brighten
during spring and summer,

letting the girls know
who the eligible bachelors are.

Once paired up
puffins often mate for life,
building burrows that boast
a separate lavatory
from the nursery,

cleanliness the family
motto.

They're not only
practical partners
--but good lovers
even if their goofy looks
tell us that couldn't
be true...

yet as winter approaches
we recall their red tipped beaks
and yellow feet
as fondly as our youth--

their colors fading
like an old romance

My original poem, and not represented anywhere else

Beard of Bees

Face veiled,
my new stepdad lifted
the queen bee up,
scooping her and her ladies

into a wire cage
which he hung on me.

Ominously the "beard" grew,
confused, disoriented bees
massing beneath my chin
in a huge hum.

He gave me a thumb's up
as he fumbled
with a tiny camera,
bees kissing my lips.

Shaking uncontrollably,
throwing off bees
like a dog flinging off beads of water--
I flung the cage
and ran

for the house, a long scarf of bees
trailing. The screen door
slammed.

I locked it
with my trembling hand.
Later I pressed my jittery fingers
against the screen mesh--

my new dad placing his palm
tenderly on the other side--
bees clinging to his sleeves.

4th of July update:

#14 Post by Michael (MV) » 04 Jul 2018, 09:16

Any poem(s) nominated that isn't going to be available after all?

That will help slim down to the final 3.

I feel strong about Beard of Bees.

It has been 2nd

but so have most of the other poems

So we are looking for 2nds to be 3rd on the 4th

Then I can launch the 3 to the finals

asap after the fireworks

A safe & wonderful 4th to every one
