Our 2 to represent the Block for August IBPC

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 27 Jul 2012, 23:26

The Block editors will select 1 poem, and I, MV, will select the other to go to IBPC.

Note instructions:

Please direct selected poems plus all the necessary info as delineated below into this thread. This includes, if the need be, arranging substitutes in regards to your choices.

When we have channeled all the required info to here in this thread, MV will then forward the 2 poems and information to the finals.

As usual, let's aim to accomplish this by the 1st of the month.

1/ MV's choice:

2/ Editor's choice:

To each of the 2:

Please post ALL the required info in this thread ASAP.

Your permission (or decline).

If accepting,
then together with your permission in this thread
please supply in full these 3 necessary/standard details:

1/ Statement confirming that the poem is not published,

and that you do not have a poem already representing another house in this month's IBPC.

Please note here: If you have already decided/committed to represent for another board, please indicate here in this thread that you already have a poem going to the IBPC this time. The rule is: one poem per poet per monthly. Let us know here ASAP, so a substitute can be arranged. It is not necessary to indicate the poem or house. IBPC Official Rules: http://webdelsol.com/IBPC/rules.html

2/ your name & current e-mail addy.

3/ the poem as you would like it forwarded.

Thank you,

and Good Luck to the Block,

Michael (MV) and the Block Editors

Update August 2nd:

#2 Post by Michael (MV) » 03 Aug 2012, 00:01

I have selected Siva's poem, currently entitled Symptoms Of Insanity.

Waiting for a reply, hopefully an acceptance.

And what about a 2nd entry?

"independence" is available, if needed.

Voice in this thread, please.

If we can't beat the deadline, then let's at least meet it.

:)

The poem ,'Symptomatic ' written by me ,is an unpublished poem.I am not representing any other board.
my e-mail id is
sivakamivelliangiri@gmail.com

Symptomatic

Not born with it. Eclipse swallows
pushing out great grandmothers
and babies, so that death and life
daisy chain like phosphorescent
super naturals and traffic whiz-a-whiz
around her birth bed; grandmother's toes
draw circles in the air to shoo away
haloed mongooses.

Tic-toc. The tongue moves within her cheek.
Things sway, things move, things fall.
She puts in and pulls out her thumb.
Predictions blare like radio messages.
Her hair would singe with solar rays.
She held in closed fists a melange of demigods
inside pinafore pockets. Her pranks like the whorls of a flower.

Derailed trams; snapped fish-plates off railway tracks;
lifted the veils from nuns faces like
how a gale opens umbrellas inside out ;
in fact the missiles that Kuttichathan shot,
hit their mansion;the mud, rubble, gravel.
Girl unobtainable, demure like Dhamayanthi...
eyes downcast, followed whosoever came,
where so ever moved; could shame Ravi Varma's art.

Outside Mahajan High School in a nightie,
she walked shoulder to shoulder with the Yakshies
leading her with a tray of tender coconut flowers.
She was used to the acoustics of weird spirits...
the hooting of nights owls, howling dogs like
some inner Walkman. As if dead ancestors
with unfinished business prodded her to action.

Strange games on smooth boards.
Coin moving at rash speed, polygons of alphabets
their osmosis of blood made her a lieutenant
very early in life: she became their agent.
Remembering this printout; long list:
Mother Rose, Mother Mary
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
kneel, sprinkle holy water, make the sign of the Cross.
That she would strain tea in bra cups
and get away with it.
A yogi like Suddhanada Bharathi
could have made a wish and spliced
the chords to her brain so that all her babies
became blue with muffled cries.
That sage men could falter on banana peels
of desire by beauty that could out beat the Apsaras.

Because she played Nala her feet pivoted
on firm ground. If it had been the Devas
she could have really done a float.
Queen of Queen Mary's College. Hair beauty of ‘49.
A premarital abortion carried her madness
full score. Cooked rice would look like worms;
father's face distorted like a demon’s.
She was Samson, slender but Narasimhan.

After which it was a sequence of Durga temples.
Hard headed priests with soft bellied navels
danced carrying flaming sesame torches.
Incantations jostled Durga’s thirty three names.
Nails bit into Neem trees pinpointing evil veins.
Witch priests from Kerala with obese wives
tried their bit, laid back and waited.

Footnote

Eclipse- the great Solar Eclipse of 1955
Kuttichatan--an evil spirit in the habit of throwing stones on new buildings.
Dhamayanthi-A princess married to Nala
Nala--He was a prince, also a skilled charioteer and a good cook. Two Devas (heavenly avatars), wished to marry Dhamayanthi, so they dressed like Nala and attended the Swayamwara, the gathering of bridegrooms where Dhamayanthi would garland her groom. Because Nala was a human and his feet touched the ground Dhamayanthi was soon able to differentiate him and garlanded him.
Yakshies--spirits of the forest
Ravi Varma's art(can be googled)--Ravi Varma's paintings in the Trivandrum Art Gallery--The speciality about this painting(Hansa Dhamayanthi) is that the eyes seem to follow us everywhere, as one walks around.--the swan is a messenger to the love between Nala and Dhamayanthi.
Narasimhan-Lord Visnu assumes this ferocious avatar to kill an atheist Hiranyakashipu
Durga--war Goddess. Kali is the angry avatar of Durga

Welcome simonclark,

This IBPC thread is in reference to the monthly IBPC. Here is the Link to the IBPC homepage:

http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/

for info, rules, announcements of monthly & archive of winning IBPC poems.

During the month, block poets post poems at this WB forum:

Writer's Block Where The Poets Hang   viewforum.php?f=2

Towards the end of the month, I start a thread here at Palaver, dedicated to selecting & arranging for 2 poems from the current month to represent the Block in the monthly IBPC.

Later, when the results are in, I post another thread here at Palaver with the judge's selections & commentary.

The last results announced were for November: viewtopic.php f=3&t=5524

In July 2012, Siva's poem placed 2nd, and is archived: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/poems/kodaikanal
