Upcoming May IBPC 2018:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 25 Apr 2018, 05:34

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of January, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Shelley's Heart

Your mother, Mary, was ill, but desperate
to find her husband, who was late
returning home to Lerici,

when she heard the news:
Percy had been hastily buried
in the sands of Viareggio.

Young Percy, you would have been appalled
to see your father's body - falling
apart - when dug up a month later

by his friends.
They lifted him onto a pyre
on the beach, and set him ablaze.

His bones crumbled into a white ash,
but his carbonized heart
would not burn.

You would have grieved
to hear Hunt's shameful refusal
at first to return the heart to your mother,

who was inconsolable.
She carried it for years, swaddled
in silks, wherever she went.

It was found at her death
in her beloved writing desk.
She had been determined

to keep your father close,
to never allow him
out of her reach
again.

Update May 1st: re Upcoming May IBPC 2018:

#9 Post by Michael (MV) » 01 May 2018, 19:31

Thanks, Bob, for accepting & providing all the required info. Good Luck in the finals.

Still waiting for Bernie to accept or decline; and, if accepting, to provide all the required info. Thanks, Bernie.

The 3rd selection is still undecided. I see Bob has initiated a nomination for Dale's poem "Oklahoma."

Let's wait another day to see if there are any other voicings.

As usual, please make those voicings visible here in this thread.

Thanks

Alien Sedition

Guests dodge the withering rain,
pack the church, cough and stamp.

A bridesmaid, then two more,
mixed ages, breasts at the neckline
no bigger than water chestnuts.

Fashionable clothes wrap smoothly
over the sexless hips of women thin
as wonton soup.

The mother drapes a fur,
reads a Lin Bao poem, starchy
like an empress.
decorously places a red cash
envelope on the gift table.

The portly groom appears,
a rumpled, ruby colored tuxedo.

The bride is spotless,
each step reveals cleavage of toes
in buff white pumps, toes I know
tanned when she unfastens her dress.

She is Chinese, American Chinese.
Talks on radio. He trades, seems rich.

The rickety cupola next door serves
cocktails, dim sum. A child in turquoise
sheath plays piano, sings.
Accepts applause.

The clouds clear.
I locate the moon. Saturn above
and to the left. String music sounds
surround me, every instrument a cello.

Look, I know this is just sour grapes,
my jealousy talking. Time to move on,
after all, it's only in American movies
a guy can lose his money
and still get the girl.

Oklahoma

Near old photographs of oil fields
and dust bowl refugees
a Rock-Ola jukebox
plays Earnest Tubb.

I’m drinking shots, ready
to stop driving trucks, to start
selling cars for my brother
in East Sacramento.

The bartender pours another
and knows she is striking,
a Cherokee maiden
with masculine shoulders,
heavy eye liner
and black press on nails.

We talk about Huntington’s disease
and Guthrie’s divorce,
ribbons of highways
and Dorothea Lange.

A wagon wheel light
is a circle of fire
on the ceiling.

I confess to sorting things out,
that my wife has filed papers.

Moon Mullican is singing
‘Goodnight Irene’
a cowboy in red leather boots,
stitched on the side
with white Texas stars,
slow dances his partner
into a corner.
