Upcoming October IBPC 2018:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 28 Sep 2018, 05:27

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Thanks for the nod guys. I'm sitting this month out. In all candor, I can't compete against a poem written by another that represents a majority of my own work. It is a matter of my own integrity and nothing else.

Best of luck to all

After some consideration and despite my earlier acceptance
I am withdrawing 'Evening of the Last Day'.

It is a habit of mine that after reading a particularly good poem
to write with the same theme in mind. I have done this several times
and even won a place, on that occasion I gave the epitaph over as a reference
for my work. On this occasion I did not, so rather than continue to cause offence
and in the spirit of goodwill I withdraw the poem and hopefully the offence.

Many thanks to those that saw merit n the poem, thank you.

Not to beat a dead horse. Part of the fun in a forum is when poets write "response" poems, or like the several Camille poems.

I think as long as it remains in the forum all is well. My original is pending acceptance or rejection as of now, was nominated and declined on another forum because of that.

In my opinion, sending a copy poem for publication or IBPC makes things different.

All we have is our work. I doubt any of us will ever make a dime from it, but it is ours.

The Penitent

Water from the blowhole
falls like a tepid rain.

The great unblinking eye,
the lateral roll,

scissoring of its jaw
and I am his.

Arch of rib and vertebrae,
icthyian cathedral, massive

heart like a hammer,
I can hear blood rush,

the billow of lungs expand
when it rises to the surface.

I trudge the barnacled
tongue to suck gill-slit

elder fish caught
in a sieve of baleen.

Three days in the bowels
of Sheol, I am disgorged

like a coughed up
choke bone, all-foured

in obeisance. I lift my eyes,
set my jaw toward Nineveh .

Can You Forgive Me

Were your heart an airport,
mine would be a plane
--its engine in flames,

the reckless pilot
pleading with the tower
for permission to land.

1/Dale Patterson

2/dalepatterson@comcast.com

3/the poem is mine

4/and is an unpublished work

5/and that I am not representing in the current IBPC

Elk Grove Industrial Park 1965

Factory girls
in coffee stained blouses
with cigarette burns
listen to transistor radios
as they ride city buses
into the park.

Working the lines
they sit on grey stools
with their feet off the ground,
count hose clamps
and put them in cartons.

Their boyfriends drive forklifts
in circular routes, load skids
with boxes transport them to semis.

They bluster in button-fly jeans
that show off their bulges
and wink at their women
each time they go by.

On break the girls go outside
and sit on wire benches
with their backs
to the wall.

The company President
squares a long skinny tie
set in a tab collar,
walks to his car,
a bright red Corvette
with convertible top.

The girls are amused
by the way his suit
shines in the sun,
make colorful remarks
that imagine the size of his dick.
