Upcoming June IBPC 2019:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 27 May 2019, 20:07

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

I nom Kenneth’s “Jesus Was” poem and Frank’s “Vir Triumphalis” poem. I am still pondering a third nom.

Thank you Bob, but I decline on Jesus Was, only because I don't think it good

Thanks Bob
Michael has also shortlisted this poem of mine,
I accept both nominations gratefully.

Outstanding month for poems from The Block
and a record number of readings, some poems
attracting several hundred reads, compared to other forums
that is significantly high by a factor of 50 times.

My selection for this month is:

1. Bob's: La Brea Tar Pits

2. Eira's: My Mother's Flashbacks

3. Michaels: Epitaphic

I am sorry I could not add more which deserve a placing
except for the comnpetition.

re "prelude without conclude"

Thanks, Frank, for the nom-nod for the poem formerly known as "epitaphic," and to which I have modified a bit.

ieuanaphywel@aol.com
this is my original and unpublished work
it is not representing any other board in the IBPC
as set out below
ieuan ap Hywel:

Vir Triumphalis (1944)

Marshal Zhukov in the van straddles
a slow clomping horse. The documentary
dubbed with martial music incongruous

with the demeanour of the foredoomed. A child asks
‘Who are these gentlemen and why do they look
so miserable like us?’ A repast of greasy cabbage

soup further stresses those suffering from dysentery.
A phalanx of generals follow in grey wolf uniforms,
alive, their future offers little but further wretchedness.

The route lined with the very Muscivites they tried
to annihilate. Thin housewives, barefoot children stare,
restrained, fascinated at a broken enemy

with so few guards. There is little evidence
of hatred, no jeering, nor cheering just pity,
there is a limit to their pity however;

they remember the bombings, hunger pangs
in the faces of their children, lists of the dead
posted on abattoir walls, constant streams

of ambulances racing from the front, lights flashing
red to siren wails. A mood of sombreness
settles on the crowd. Wehrmacht soldaten

in ragged uniforms with unkempt beards clank
by with improvised mess cans at the hip, ready
for a sudden chow call. Despair worn like a limp

flag progresses through Ivan's capital in blocks
of five thousand, pass buildings, towering office
blocks with balconies flowering office workers.

A woman turns to gaze at a commissar, her dress
flows out in the breeze, wafts a fragrance wasted
on the prisoners, their situation demands

total obedience to the law of survival, one lapse . . .
A Russian officer fills the frame, in a pristine
uniform, a chest with campaign medals,

shoulders heavy with gilded braid. A mother
cradles her blond haired son, cups her hand
around his head to protect him from the sight

of these broken men, fine looking men, noble even
on another day, ushered like cattle. Crowds follow
the cavalcade reluctant to release their eyes.

This augers the final landler of National Socialism,
the lies of the Führer unfurl as empty as when first
uttered, the mania of the beast shown in futility.

The sordid end is near, the crowds linger in the squares
as the last detachment marches to the railway, loaded into
wagons, the doors slam shut then shunted of into oblivion.

Water tankers clean the street of excreta, a victor's distain.
But where is magnanimity, it is as absent as the king's
joy at the news of his pyrrhic victory at Heraclea.

La Brea Tar Pits

I came to Los Angeles for the Strip,
the nightclubs, the famous restaurants

where celebrities gather, picking
at their salads, and sipping wines

that would cost me a year’s rent.
In the heart of the city I found

something less common: tar pits
bubbling, as if waiting for drunks

to mistake them for spas.
Whole populations were swallowed here:

dire wolves, a mammoth, snails,
and millipedes whose feet

couldn’t walk away
from the gooey asphalt.

Were animals dumber then?
If a ground sloth was sinking

under a seething surface,
why would a saber-tooth follow it?

Because it couldn’t help itself?
The way my uncle couldn’t leave

his wife--though he knew
where their marriage was headed:

acrimony and alimony
consuming years of his life.

As I look at these creatures
from the safety of thousands of years,

I wonder, how many more years
will I live? Not nearly

as long as these tar pits....
I'll surely be forgotten long

before the legendary starlets
of the 30s were lost sight of,

their names swallowed
by Hollywood long,
long ago...

My Mother's Flashbacks

I saw your father last night

Two years have passed
since his demise shook me,
waves radiating from my epicentre.

In the aftershock, I whispered to her
of his slipping away, but she was lost
in a mass of tangles.

Aw - he looked so handsome

He wore a flat cap in winter
to warm his shiny pate.
Now, it rests at the back

of my reminiscence drawer
with her dragonfly brooch
and snapshots of their life.

Their wedding photo, eyes smile, lips
say cheese. His dark waves intact, yes
he was her handsome, unending heartthrob.

I think he might take me back

When their marriage fractured, a tug of war
stretched me until I split into pieces.
Although middle-aged, I was a child.

He embraced a new wife for twelve years.
Even if his life had extended, he could not
- would not return to her empty arms.

He gave me a beautiful brooch

Her smile was wide -
unaware the broken butterfly would
not settle on her breast again.
