The Owl and the Blackbird
The Owl and the Blackbird
The Owl and the Blackbird
It’s barely light when he stirs
joining the avian choir.
I cringe to hear his flutelike trill,
listen as he scuttles about.
Pulling our feather duvet up
over my head, I squint out,
see him strut, fully feathered,
crest still in disarray.
He zooms away, so I doze
until he flutters back
to peck my cool cheek
twittering Cup of tea luv
When twilight’s past, he flies
into our nest, soon fast
asleep, head under his wing.
I’m still wide awake
at midnight and perch beside him,
listening to the loud rattle
of stertorous breathing,
my feathers ruffled.
Wide eyed I swivel my head
from side to side,
knowing he won’t wake
even when I hoot!

Sweet. Can’t come up with anything to improve it. Good as is.
