Re: Novel Editors From the NYC - Manuscripts to Market

You know, so so many of the freelance editors out there are either academics, failed authors, or former editors with publishing houses. In the case of academics they don't believe in writing to a market, which makes them useless if you are writing a genre novel. Failed authors are limited in their v...

Re: Algonkian Novel Writing Courses - Reviews and Interviews

Char, you've been in the novel writing program and you were recently signed by ICM, right? What about your novel?

It could be a candidate for television!

btw, congrats on making it to the other side.

Algonkian Novel Writing Program

Hey, RlL! You okay?

I'm almost through Part II. It's a grinder but it's worth it. I just wish I'd discovered this before I blew my inheritance on a near useless MFA from U.A.

btw, Michael told me that Algonkian is making more inroads with TV producers. Did you hear anything about that?

Re: Author Salon Mission and Discussion

Boy, this sure got off topic fast!

I don't blame you for posting that ridiculous SF thing, Liz, but I want to keep this thread on track for the sake of the other posters and program members. Using the WB here for this purpose is a benefit because we're all too nose to grindstone on Author Salon.

Re: Author Salon Mission Statement

I'm just now populating this thread to discuss the move on Author Salon towards the novel writing program.

I've put out a call to some other users to stop by and weigh in.

Since when did you get so witty? I'm not obsessed with it, Char. The bimbo eruptions are too many even if they are only twice a year.

Re: Sample of Reviews Related to Algonkian Writer Conference

Just had to stop by and post this. A woman scorned went into ballistic overdrive on Algonkian and Michael. Apparently, she was rejected from the pitch conference. Laurence O'Bryan noticed it and was shocked. He made a post in support. Michael followed, then me. I've never read a bigger load of ravin...

Algonkian is not Squaw Valley. Algonkian is not like a Writer's Digest conference, or like any other big conference event. Algonkian is also not like Tin House or Bread Loaf or any of the feel good writer retreats. Just so you know.

Re: Author Salon, Agent Query - Isabel and Woody

I just got back from a LD party and saw the video post above and all I can say is OMG, LET'S ALL QUIT AUTHOR SALON RIGHT NOW!

We'll watch this video over and over and over and snowflake ourselves into contracts. How simple can it get everyone? WHOOO!

Re: Coverage Post and Agent Query on Author Salon

If I thought she was right I would give up trying to improve my novel and just self publish. It's Isabel's code for I'm special and if you dare think you can ever learn to write like I do, well think again, because you can't and you never will. This might be a little extreme, Liz, but I generally a...

Using it now. I've replaced the whole center using much better plot briefs. Now building to climax with the Six Act complication and reversal requirements.

Wheww!

Re: Coverage Post and Agent Query on Author Salon

The thin skin test made me think about a few things, about myself and how I react in a way that defeats me, especially the questions about "loading the gun" and rushing to defend. Same here. I was very immature about the process years ago and certainly guilty of the chastising: Have you ever chasti...

Re: Coverage Post and Agent Query on Author Salon

Amen to that! Author Salon on most days is like a mouthful of warm buttered toast, and on days when it's bitter the reality might get me down a bit, but I emerge from that and I'm a stronger writer. Always. And what does not kill my manuscript makes me stronger. See, don't I sound like a writer? I h...

Re: Coverage Post and Agent Query on Author Salon

I'm using this as a check list. Also wondering if any of this language or these issues should be directly addressed in an agent query. But since Author Salon will do the querying, it probably doesn't matter. Nice to know though. AS would approach this differently than we do, but AS or no, you must ...
