She Said she Wouldn't Cry

She Said she Wouldn't Cry
by Ieuan ap Hywel

Boyle said
as one decreases the other increases
another way of saying
inversely proportional.

As gas pressure decreases
its volume increases
before it explodes
dramatically.

Three months ago
the spotting appeared
then: needles, tests, results,
consultants, radiography, technicians
and further scans etcetera, etcetera.
Until the diagnosis
and prognosis.
Then Boyle suddenly seemed
relevant.

I'm having a hard time getting any kick out Boyle and inversely proportional in relation to the person's health which appears to be not good.

Interesting and effective analogy

Normal, natural, and right to cry
when it is a time to cry.

In the second stanza, consider the image of a balloon 🎈

Boyle discovered a relationship regarding the change in volume of a gas when its pressure decreases;
as the pressure decreases the volume increases proportionally but inversely, in fact when the
pressure reduces to atmospheric pressure(14.7 psi) the expansion of volume is explosive.
That's why engineers never use air for testing a pressure vessel, they use water because water
is incompressible (relatively) there is no expansion, hence no explosive force.
Boyle's law, p1v1 = p2v2,
e.g. 1000 psi at 1 cubic foot volume = 1 psi at 1000 cubic feet.

PSI = pounds force per square inch.

The poem is a metaphor on as in Boyle's law.

The appearance of blood and the possible consequences leading to loss of a life.
Someone very dear to me has just experienced cancer and all that entails
and believe our family felt that pressure, and the relief of pressure.
And Boyle, my old apprentice day friend, seemed relevant somehow.

I understand Boyles law from my college chemistry days. And yes it works as a metaphor but it just didn’t do anything for me in terms of more than an apt metaphor leaving me going oh, ok and then moving on.
