A-Muse
Do women have male muses?
Do poets have the same sex muses?
Is it important to the poet?
Can a muse be an animal?
Can a poet have a pantheon of muses?
Can you be a poet without a muse?
Can muses exist without poets?
Do poets invite their muses
or do they just show up unannounced?
Do muses speak, gesticulate, mime,
use sign language, use telepathy,
write on napkins, leave messages
on the beach, on TV, in garbage cans,
in clouds, I mean what are their modes
of communication? Do muses mutate
over time? Is their a hierarchy of muses?
Is there a muse agency that I could call
and for the right price hire Charles Simic's
muse or Wallace Stevens' if muses don't die,
and if they do die, can they die before
the poet dies? What are muses doing
when the poet isn't writing
or where are they when the poet
writes a shitty poem? Are they hiding
and laughing at the poet? Are muses
ever not in the mood? Do muses
have muses, is it kind of like pyramid
schemes? When a poet isn't writing
are muses hanging out together
prying each other for ideas?
Do muses have to fuck and drink
to be good muses like Buk
requires of poets? Are muses whores
and pimps, or angels and demons?
Do muses really want to be poets
and are they saving the best material
for themselves?

Re: A-Muse
This is hilarious… love the last 2 lines and much more. You can cut some lines, but the poem’s quite a hoot. Poets everywhere should like this.

Love it Billy, and of course they are saving the best for themselves.
