Developments in a Dark Room
A tray of chemicals in a dark room
couldn’t have exposed love
any clearer than the moment I saw your face.
I didn’t study your portfolio or dive deep
into your past. I didn’t interview
old boyfriends or seek advice.
I didn’t have a checklist
for someone to fall in love with:
a woman with a dark storm of hair,
flashing eyes…olive skin,
someone who loves literature,
a woman as bright as light on water.
I saw you for the first time at dusk,
your face and the room softened
in the wash of shadows.
Was my love for you simply a matter
of brain chemicals--dopamine,
adrenaline, oxytocin?
On Saturn lightning can turn methane
into falling diamonds.
That's the way love was with us;
in a moment everything changed,
our hearts melded together
now for over 50 years
though I too give thanks
for what all lovers share:
the right chemistry.

Diamonds are a great metaphor for enduring love.
Enjoyed the poem, here’s to another fifty.

Hi Bob,
Workshop consider making that last line
the right chemistry
as the title.
Then finale as:
in a darkroom moment everything changed -
our hearts still developing together
now for over 50 years
