Reading Names in the Late Afternoon

#1 Post by Billy » 29 Jul 2013, 00:42

Reading Names in the Late Afternoon

wandering in cemeteries
the names belonging to the dead
belonging to no one anymore
repeated under the breath

underfoot the grass
the sinkholes
for breaking ankles

no flowers no memories
a hollow in the midst
of the living

the voices come back empty
a drone a plea a confession
with nobody to hear
who would want to
with all the ruckus outside

maybe tonight
in the darkness of my bed
flowers will grow

Hi Billy,

maybe could abbreviate the title:

Reading Names, Late Afternoon

is that ruckus inside or outside? considering cemetery & burial

Esp like the last stanza; yet workshop suggesting other than "will grow":

maybe tonight
in the darkness of my bed
flowers will surface

maybe even "emerge"

This is my favorite by Francis Glanton....
"Walk with me, to the cemetery tonight.
Your hands so cold, in the warmth of the night.
Step over tombstones, and lonely graves, I left my heart at sea, caught in the waves.
Grab my hand, show me connection, show me love and show me affection.
And while we danced, you turned to ash, my memories will remain at the cemetery at last."
