Photos Of The Beatles, 1969
Browsing these old photos,
I recall my own youth, the present
dissolving away
when I remember you in swing skirts
and high knee socks.
Why were these pictures
shot in front of John's mansion,
with its lawns curried
like prized horses?
George and John seem out of place,
in bushy beards and wide-brimmed hats,
looking like pioneers
who have survived their first winter
on the harsh plains.
Here, in this photo, Ringo
wanders off alone,
as does George, hands in his pockets.
Tittenhurst seems like an odd place
to engender natural poses
and friendly
quips,
a far cry from the small rooms
where John and Paul listened to Elvis
and wrote their early songs--as John says
"eyeball-to-eyeball".
Yet here they are, the band's
breakup a year away.
Where were we in 1969?
In college, eyes closed, lying
on my dorm bed, listening
to Strawberry Fields Forever.
Even today when I hear that song
I stop and think of you.
I cherish your letters
as much--maybe more--
than the liner notes
of my worn vinyl albums.
Forgive me, but I will always love
the Beatles more.

Last stanza best. Nice stroll down penny lane
Re: Photos Of The Beatles, 1969
Yes, thanks for the trip down memory lane, Bob. I loved the Beatles too and had forgotten some of their history eg Tittenhurst.
I love
a far cry from the small rooms
where John and Paul listened to Elvis
and wrote their early songs--as John says
"eyeball-to-eyeball".
but the ending stanza is my favourite -yes, I'll always love the Beatles more too.
The only nit I can find is perhaps St 1 where you have used recall and remember quite close together, but I'm sure that can be fixed easily enough.
Thanks for the memories!

Photos bring back memories.
Your verse glides through .
lawns curried like the prized horses --- beautiful description.
The songs still ring in the ears.
The ending is simple but touching.
Enjoyed, Bob.
