The Owl and the Blackbird (revision 1)

#1 Post by capricorn » 22 Jul 2019, 02:54

The Owl and the Blackbird

I’m just drifting off when he stirs.
It’s barely light but up he hops,
clears his throat ready to warble -
Blackbird singin’ in the dead of night

I cringe, pull the duvet over my head,
hear him scratching, scuttling about,
then peep out, see him strut around
crest still in disarray. Not bothered,

he flaps away. I doze until, too soon,
he flutters back, pecks my cool cheek,
twittering Cup o’ tea luv
then off he flaps again.

Later, after twilight he squawks
’night Luv flies up the old oak
to swoop into our nest, soon
fast asleep, head under his wing.

Still awake when the moon is high
I perch beside him, the loud
rattle of his stertorous breath
ruffles me.

Wide-eyed, I swivel my head,
stare at him knowing
he won’t wake even when I hoot
Sweet Dreams luv!

The Owl and the Blackbird

It’s barely light when he stirs
joining the avian choir.
I cringe to hear his flutelike trill,
listen as he scuttles about.

Pulling our feather duvet up
over my head, I squint out,
see him strut, fully feathered,
crest still in disarray.

He zooms away, so I doze
until he flutters back
to peck my cool cheek
twittering Cup of tea luv

When twilight’s past, he flies
into our nest, soon fast
asleep, head under his wing.
I’m still wide awake

at midnight and perch beside him,
listening to the loud rattle
of stertorous breathing,
my feathers ruffled.

Wide eyed I swivel my head
from side to side,
knowing he won’t wake
even when I hoot!

Sweet. Can’t come up with anything to improve it. Good as is.

I thought it was time to post something again.

My muse has gone! I've decided to revisit old poems to give them an overhaul. Although this poem was ok I thought I'd rewrite with a different slant.
It's got my brain thinking!

Good to hear your voice again. I remember this…. A poem on a blackbird mimicking speech is delightful. I have a lot to learn about blackbirds, the red winged one my fave.

We have a pair in our garden. They strut around as if they own it
only flying into the bushes in the borders when we get too close.
They do have the most beautiful song, so warblingly relaxing.
It as if they are intent on wooing us. They keep the slugs down
and now we've stopped laying down those horrible synthetic
slug killing pellets. They nested to close to the ground one year
and cats killed their brood. Enjoyed the humour all over again.

Thanks Bob & Frank,
I had great fun writing this (and revising). I love birds. We don't live in the countryside, but have so many come into our garden - besides blackbirds we see pigeons, magpies, ravens, thrushes, sparrows, gulls blue tits and a robin ... and occasionally a heron (looking to see if we have fish in the pond.
