Oh My, I’m Growing Old

Oh My, I’m Growing Old

Younger women have swept me from their lives
as they would gray hair from their floors. Still, hope lives.

Lately I have turned to women of my own age.
They can’t cope with sports talk. They lead boring lives.

We drink green tea, play mahjong, gossip, read
aloud lewd stories of Pope, Yeats, poets’ lives.

We raise martinis to Dorothy Parker.
We drink two, three, four. With us hope lives.

Should I find myself underneath someone, I plead
“Let’s elope!“…Loneliness forgives our lives

and is best played as a team sport. Older women
saved my life. Hear! Hear! A toast to living nine lives!
