The Insomnia of a Swallow

The Insomnia of a Swallow

I followed you everywhere. I longed
for you to fly to me like a swallow

to its favorite branch. More often
you either hid in the branches

hearing my voice, or flew to the roof
searching for a better choice...

someone who could leave your heart
fluttering like feathers

in a burst of wind. Good luck, darling.
That's unlikely.

It's not the way the world works.
I won't take solace from it either.

It will be heart wrenching
seeing you left alone, hovering

over someone else...who won't
acknowledge your shadow...

and all your friends saddened,
unable to help you,

and you as miserable as I was,
like a swallow who can’t sleep

at night, its territory flooded
with bright lights.

Really like that line about the heart fluttering like feathers.

Like the whole poem and “who won’t acknowledge your shadows”

"someone who could leave your heart
fluttering like feathers

in a burst of wind."

^^ gave cause for my literary Heart to silently
roar like the breeze combing through the lion's mane.

But this was the heart, the unique anima of the poem:

"I won't take solace from it either.

It will be heart wrenching
seeing you left alone, hovering"

^^ rejected, then dejected, yet remaining compassionate (Bob Dylan's "Like a rolling stone" comes to mind)

^^ a rippling effect from that earlier image
