After Maslow's Hierarchy

If it fits nicely in the cupboard,
if it gives off heat,
if it can be used as collateral.

I need Dewar's and Mozart,
long soaks in the tub with Yeats.
I need a few trees and the sun
on my face time-to-time, solitude.

I need the furtive probe of
a curious paw, the nuzzle
of a wet nose at 3 AM.

Mostly I need all my faith to believe
there is something better after this,
something cleaner.

On the banks of the Nile, the Plover
stands on the tongue of a crocodile.
In a circadian of mutual survival,
the beast does not bite.

I love these lines:
I need Dewar's and Mozart,
long soaks in the tub with Yeats.

The poem is clever and engaging. I'm not sure the last stanza works as well as it should. Maybe it's the impersonal tone of it. I would like to end the poem on the Yeats' line...maybe something along this path...just take it, as Michael says, in the workshopping spirit.

If it fits nicely in the cupboard,
if it gives off heat,
if it can be used as collateral.

For now I don't need a woman.
I need a few trees and the sun
on my face time-to-time, solitude.

I need the furtive probe
of a curious paw, the nuzzle
of a wet nose at 3 AM.

Mostly I need all my faith to believe
there is something better after this,
something cleaner.

At least I need Dewar's and Mozart,
long soaks in the tub with Yeats.
