Marry Me, Emily Dickinson
My heart is big like my house, waiting for you
--servants at your beckoning.
You are naturally timid,
but why delay?
It can be a small wedding.
I'm afraid if we wait I'll lose you.
Forget my niece.
who called you “that little hussy”.
Abbie sees you becoming rich
at her expense.
Emily, I don’t give a damn
how an old man like me
is seen by others.
Why should I defend myself?
It’s obvious as an open field
how much in love I am
with you.
Imagine how shocked my niece was
seeing you on my lap!
Fireworks going off in your salon
would have surprised her less.
Today, coming over, my fuming niece
was as far from my thoughts
as drought in the Sahara is
to a farmer in Missouri.
Wild mares were in the hills
--as nervous as running geese,
changing directions rapidly,
turning their faces away
at my mere glance.
Emily, I long to tame one
—but if I were to throw my arms
around her neck in a long embrace
whispering for her
to come home with me
I fear her hesitation,
her feet stamping nervously
in place.
Do not shake your auburn mane,
the idea incomprehensible.
Emily, don’t turn away.
Without your love
I am but a foolish old goat
tangled in his own
tethers.

Hi Bob,
A workshop-recast of the last:
Do not shake your auburn mane,
the idea incomprehensible.
Emily, don’t turn away -
Without your love
I am but a foolish old goat
tangled in his own
tethers.
