The New Year's Fish
As ice clinks in my glass of ice tea
I look out on the Pacific.
It's New Year's, and what's wrong
with being optimistic?
I'm like a fat man in a house of mirrors:
No matter where I look I see myself
as I'll be in the future,
slimmed down, like a trout.
My plate’s fish, his head and tail intact,
lies in a pool of herbs and sauces
as if waiting for the next wave
to pull him back into the sea
unaware of his exposure,
as if it would be enough for a man
naked but for his hat and socks
to enter the public again.

Re: The New Year's Fish
I'm sorry I've been away for so long. I have a home-based business which is winding down as I sell off the remaining items, and I got a bunch of orders I had to fill.
Overall, I like the poem. It has a quirky quality. For me, though, it doesn't quite gel into something cohesive, if you know what I mean, or perhaps I should say sensible. I also have questions, of course, like why you will be slim in the future?
Actually, as I reread it, I realize there's a lot I don't understand.

I like the stretch you take in this poem and the poem, Pilot Whale. I believe they both word in that context.
