I like the honesty of this. I like the words chosen to end lines on as well. I especially love that last line
I would replace “nigh” with near.

Thank you, Bob. After fancying up the language quite a bit, I finally decided I was getting too far from normal language. The problem with this poem is that it expresses an old feeling for me, so it doesn't feel fresh.
You know, when I was young, the first poetry I wrote was about loss and death, so that's been a big part of my poetry all my life. Now that I'm 73 and might be gone in five years, I'm justified in writing about it, but I am getting tired of my own schtick.
I went with "nigh" for the long "I" sound. "Near" is better.
