Upcoming June IBPC 2022:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 27 May 2022, 19:33

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

I nominate either Ken's "Secret Life of Trees" or “What the Gardener Heard”. Ken, what’s your preference?

Update June 1st re Upcoming June IBPC 2022:

#4 Post by Michael (MV) » 02 Jun 2022, 03:27

Hi to All,

In May I underwent 2 eye surgeries.

It was difficult to workshop much.
But I do check in and read.

June will likely be the same for the other eye.

Please voice your nominations in this thread.

If nominated, but not available, let us know in this IBPC thread, asap please.

The only poems that should appear in this thread are the 3 that have been finally selected to go forward to the finals.

Hopefully, this will be decided by Friday evening.

June - Spring melting
in the heat of July -
Summer

Michael
Sad to hear that old age has caught up with you
as it did with my kidney stone last month, thankfully now passed.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery with your eye
and hopefully your pending operation will be successful too.
Best wishes

The Kidney Stone Club
(for poets with kidney stones)

My history with kidney stones began when I was 40. And although my history is documented with less painstricken episodes than others - because mine usually pass on through, which is ideal solution. When that doesn't naturally occur, then the urologist, if not the ER beforehand.

In addition to the very first time, when I didn't know what was gnawing in my side, about 12 years ago, has been the worst. The stone was vey large; and the location of its lodging made the laser method not an option.

Lithotripsy was what the situation called for, and what the urologist ordered. Beforehand he explained showing me the scan that the stone was not only large but very dense, and since he could only submit me to so much lithotripsy at a time, that a 2nd procedure might soon after be needed to totally rid the stone. Fortunately, because my urologist is a David among urologist, he felled that giant with one lithotripsy.

The Stint - an uncomfortable necessity.

I've already explained the purpose; now based on my experience with stint in my tract. In general, uncomfortable for not being normal, and alarming when the external end initially showed itself like a snake tongue sticking out from my piss hole - what the hell!
Someone should have told me so I wouldn't have been startled - but I appreciated the simile I found - got familiar with the sight -

However, what I did not, because not possible to, get used to what could get painful if I didn't get to a bathroom to leak at the initial urge to go, and that is the usual reflex to squeeze and hold back a while if necessary is firmly countered by the stint keeping the tract necessarily held fixed open. The attempt to squeeze to hold - there's the rub - that's the potential for pain - The strategy: stay in easy reach to a commode, and when the urge is arriving, just go piss. Again, I wasn't schooled on this, so I learned - and I'm happy to share to prepare.

Now the removal of that invasive stint. That serpent tongue - that's where the doctor grabs hold, and pulls the snake-wire out - like swiftly pulling off a bandage - freaking feeling it slide through, and then for the finale, the sensation of a disconnect (which I should have realized would occur). Fortunately the good nurse called me the day before, and told me to reserve a pain bill before the removal, and one for later after. And, too, the most excellent, skillful, and kind urologist allowed me an extra round of the numbing spray before relieving me of the fish line.

Too, the insertion, bearing, and removal were partially a psychological & emotional sore being in the manhood zone -

at least all I have related was how it was for me, and it's still a vivid recollection 12 years later.

So, the stint is like Part 2 of the ordeal - and when I thought it was finally over, this happened about 5 hours later: It was July humid & hot, and I was drinking plenty of water - I began feeling a pain that was different than that gnawing kidney stone pain. So, about 4:30, (and on a Friday afternoon) I called to report it, and that I had not urinated in hours. Fortunately. the kind nurse/assistant who was wasn't there that AM, had returned for the afternoon. She asked me if I had been given some sample sizes of a medication to take home after the stint removal. I hadn't; I drove there, arriving before 5 to get the remedy; otherwise it would have been the ER. I don't recall the name of the pharmaceutical, but I definitely recall/understand why I was supposed to be equipped with some office samples before Ieaving.

The pain was because my bladder wouldn't urinate - wouldn't empty. The urinary needed to reacclimate, after a week of being held hostage in an unnatural position. The take-home samples were a medicine to encourage the reacclimation. I only had to reach for it about 3 times before things were back to normal.

Make sure that detail is tended to.

Thanks, Michael. It's the splint they insert for the laser approach that is concerning....I don't know if they needed to do that for your ultrasound approach....

I see I'm not alone. My first stone, when I was in my 30's, passed uneventfully
when I lived in the tropics. I did notice two extremely sharp objects about
pea size in my nether regions but they dissolved on their own accord.
My recent adventure came suddenly after I'd drank a glass of cold water.
It was like someone had stabbed me in the side and was twisting the
dagger from side to side. I had three days of agony but then diclofenac
suppositories wold kill the pain for six hours. I had to wait then for two
hours before my next fix. In all ten days of moderate pain after the thing
passed. Best wishes to you two old guys across the pond.

Hi Bob,

I will add to my narrative, to include re the "stint" - that's what I remember the term for the device to be, to necessarily keep the urinary tract (urethra?) open, so debris from the deconstruction can pass through, and not get caught in the lining, resulting in pain.

Hope to include later this evening.

I 2nd Ieuan’s “Sea Fever”.
I also accept for “Elvis Sightings”.
email: bobbybradshw@yahoo.com
This poem is original, unpublished and it isn’t being represented elsewhere.

Elvis Sightings

My best friend Gail saw Elvis
hanging around Guitar Center,

strumming a song to strangers
when a string broke,

sending a loud twang
throughout the store.

Lily Lee saw The King
cruising up to her on I-24

in a Mercedes, waving
his honorary FBI badge at her

to pull over for speeding--
only to whiz by

as she eased off onto the shoulder.
Elvis...always the kidder.

How many sightings have there been
by tourists at Graceland

who have glimpsed Elvis
peering around columns,

eavesdropping, trying
to snap photos of them?

I think of his bloated body,
fallen off the toilet, curled up

on the floor. How could
the king of heartthrobs,

who could have loved any woman,
seek refuge in drugs?

And how many Cadillacs over the years
did he give away to "friends"?

My heart goes out to him,
alone, his car’s blue light flashing—

and him waving his badge at a stranger
to pull over, to talk awhile,

his own life horribly
stalled.

Sea Fever
Diptych

'I Must go Down to the sea Again.' -John Masefield

Orders from the Chief Eng.,
The bilge pump packing needs replacing
The lignum vitae stern gland is worn
and sea water is flooding the bilges.
It needs adjusting to stem the flow.
The Sec. had lost part of an index finger.
The ship had rolled, the piston moved
Shearing a digit. Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin
Would have been proud of such efficiency.
It's hot down here, noisy and smelling
Of foul, black bunkering oil.

I think of Penny above on the starboard deck.
Amidships, she lies face down on a towel
My eyes like to linger on her bronzed body.
The roaring forties lift the liner to the peak
of a swell then dips to the trough.
The breeze ruffles strands of her blond
diaphanous hair, translucent cilia worshipping
the sun. In the morning, after my watch,
I shall happen to pass by and say,
'Hello.' She will turn to look up at me,
to greet me. I shall introduce myself
and gaze on her ravishing face.
I shall surrender, trapped in this helpless
yet happy estate.

This poem is the original work of Ieuan ap Hywel
ieuanaphywel@aol.com
It is unpublished and is not representing
any other board in the IBPC this month.

My offer is clearly based on the fact that that it should be good enough to represent the IBPC.

That's my point. It's not your call. Every poem is considered eligible. My comment was addressed to Michael who administers this part of Writers Block.

If there are no independent nominations, it can be assumed a poem is NOT clearly good enough.

I stand by my comment.
