Upcoming September IBPC 2022:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 31 Aug 2022, 00:28

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

My Father's Death

Daddy, you lay on a bed, eyes closed.
You had made comebacks before--
a half dozen heart attacks...

Could you hear us?
You were an anchor
dropped in deep waters.

Jean was telling you how much
she loved you.
My turn was next.

I wanted to tell you about a diving trip
I had made years ago. You'll understand
why it's only coming up now.

It was to the South Pacific
to see a WWII convoy ship,
perhaps like one you'd sailed on.

I was stupid, going it alone.
noticing too late
the gathering hammerheads.

It makes an enviable story now,
but not then...
Anyway, one thought kept coming up

that afternoon as the hammerheads
massed larger and larger
overhead--

what I'd always meant to say to you,
an odd thing to think about
with sharks beneath my boat.

Daddy, as Jean stroked your hair
I found the right words
for my gratitude,

but timing isn’t my forte.
You were no longer lost
in a fog of morphine.

Your jaw hung open.
Daddy, one day it will be me
lying in a bed like yours...

dependent on luck
or strangers saving me,
vulnerable

as a diver without an exit strategy,
hammerheads refusing
to disperse, his oxygen low...

Only my son will linger
over the wreck of my body,
trying to come up with the right words…

I have already forgiven him
the way I pray you forgive me.

Cogan's Hit

Ekphrastic Found in the Neo-noir crime film: 'Killing them Softly' (2012)
Movie score: 'Love Letters' by Ketty Lester (1962)

The engine purrs,
Kenny changes gear
the exhaust lets out a whoop
of throaty triumph.

Cogan speaks softly,
Kenny responds
to his prompting.
‘Nice an’ smooth.’
Window slides down.
Rain batters the car,
wipers brush back an’ fore
with a humdrum clunk.

‘Right ahead Kenny,
a little bit ahead;
pull right up next to him.’
Break-squeal plays in tandem
to the groan of the wipers.

Markie hugs his broken ribs,
turns to stare, the weight
of the beating in his eyes.
Misery fills his turned-down mouth.
Eyes swing to their fullest extent.
A bridge of blood upon his broken nose.

A pistol chamber moves back to unleash
spite, a puff of smoke ejects
with the cartridge, rain droplets shake
free from the bullet as it speeds
out of its cloud hurtling
towards Markie.

Markie turns to look to his right.
The bullet strikes his side window,
a maze of crazed stress-fractures imprints
the glass. A black hole appears above
and left of centre. The glass shatters
as the bullet enters the cab,
an empty cartridge pirouettes
vapour ghosting as it spins
for a slowed down eternity
and out through the window.

The mechanism returns to shoot
again, the chamber recoils.
Markie appears to throw up a warding-off
hand. A flash shines out of a grey cloud,
the missile rotates before the hit.
Blood erupts from Markie's head.

Blood and water droplets fill the cab,
dance to the score in slow motion.
The wonder of the song insulates
the horror of the scene.
Markie, dying alone in a storm.
Cogan shoots again . . .

the bullet strikes
the door panel. His car drifts
forward into the junction. Markie slumps
forward . . .

Lights approach side-on
from a vehicle that lights-up
Markie. He appears to sit up,
hands splay out as if to stop
the bullets.

The collision rotates
Markie’s car side on to complete
a half turn, it's skid throws up
surface water in an arc.
The car settles down to a stop.
The wipers grumble to an' fro,
clunk . . . clunk,
the noise fills the cab.

Markie's cadaver swings in a dance
with the skid. A pickup looms
out of the black night, crashes
into the rear of Markie's car, the bonnet lifts.
A clutter of loose components lift up
and out of the engine housing
freed from gravity, make a reel
to the score as Letty sings,
'I'm not alone in the night.'

Rebound momentum smacks
Markie into the windscreen
and smashes it
with his head.

The song winds down slowly,
Letty's voice out of sync.
The clip shifts to a bar.
Cogan's raucous, voice sounds
over Obama's inaugural speech,
'Pay me for the hit.'
