Upcoming July IBPC 2021:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 01 Jul 2021, 08:17

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Thanks, Bob, for voicing and getting the ball rolling, as usual.

I 2nd Billy's Free Spirit; and with Kenneth's response to this poem: "My first nom" viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8007#p38342. --

Billy's Free Spirit is the first of the 3 selected to go forward to the finals.

free spirit

that's what he called me
both of us bouncing in the bed
of an old pickup
the smell of manure
swirling around us

hitchhikers
friends for a mile or so

i grinned but didn't show it
he was young
didn't know the difference
between a free spirit
and a lost soul

i guess i didn't either
that was the beauty of it
not knowing

This is my original work, unpublished, and I’m not representing any other board.

Second on If I Needed Someone.

With regret, I'm not able to accept for The Sprstts as I've a nomination elsewhere.

Good luck Billy and Bob

I nominate Frank's 1917, or his haiku if he so chooses. Is that allowed?

If I Needed Someone

The stylus on my record player sighed.
I Feel Fine filled my room
as I recalled yesterday's concert,
the Beatles onstage.

A ribbon of blood
stretched to my ankle,
I rushed out of my room,
She’s a Woman blaring behind me.

Mama gasped
seeing my bloody foot.
All afternoon she lectured me
on boys and unwanted babies…

Instead of class the next day
I sneaked off to the public pool
where other girls on the lam
twittered away like wrens by the chain link fence.

A boy was grabbing his knees in mid air
cannon balling into the water—
others strolling by
with the rakish swagger of crows.

I worried the chances of a first kiss
would override caution. And Mama?
Out of nowhere Jeff
suddenly lay down next to me

on the concrete deck
talking about our English teacher,
Mrs. Monroe, with her light down
of a mustache.

My heart drummed in my ears;
I was lightheaded, standing
at the edge of the high dive board
for the first time.

Was this kiss gonna happen?
Jeff’s hand touched mine.
I swayed like water
carried in a bucket.

Any moment I would slosh
over the brim.
If I Needed Someone
throbbed from the speakers.

This is my unpublished poem
ieuanaphhywel@aol.com
Ieuan ap hywel
I am not representing any other board at this time.

A Sparrow Found (1917)

‘I liked to watch her sleep; she slept like a baby.’
Simone (Momone) Berteaut, Piaf, (Paris: Opera Mundi 1969).

The hiss of steam from a coffee machine
a gurgle of absinthe into a glass
rattle of coins on the counter,
the swish from the apron of a serveuse
a piano playing, music feeding
my heart and my mind.

Sitting on the floor of the bistro;
listening to all that went on.
The smell of wine and lager,
of food being prepared.
Chatter of diners, and in the evenings,
singing from drunks.
That was my life Momone,

but all this without the splash of colour,
without contrast, just a void until
the age of five. I saw the world by hearing,
by smell and by touch.

Imagine a night sky with no moon,
no twinkling stars. A universe that is endless
forever in darkness, a black hole in my life.

They say there are places where people
shut out the light and meditate in silence.
Oh what horror, just emptiness, no life.

Mother had left, only Oma Mena to care for me,
to live off scraps, loved but unwashed.
Opu soused in wine. Mena servicing
workmen in the bistros.

I sang those songs;
I’d memorised them.
Such beauty
in the refrains.
Then Oma's admonishment,
“Sleep now Edith, stop singing;
it's time to sleep.”

Billy's comment in the poem's thread:

https://www.the-writers-block.net/forum ... 133#p38366

will serve as a 2nding for Frank's poem.

In the future, please voice nominations in the designated IBPC thread.

Thanks,

Michael (MV)
