Upcoming February IBPC 2022:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 31 Jan 2022, 02:31

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

Requiem For A Unicorn

The elders say a dead man went
missing from a cave, and there
is a place with no more
sickness, fear, want or pain.

My brother put his back into
his faith, living what he believed,
traveling to other countries
building schools, hospitals,

digging wells and planting crops.
He sent photos of children
skinny but always smiling.

When we were kids, we beat hell
out of each other, but no one else
better so much as lay a finger.

The time our father fell away
for awhile and we stopped church
as a family, my little brother ironed
his own shirt and went alone.

My brother is up there
with a bush axe and hoe,
clearing me off a little plot
next to him, to keep an eye out.

VFW

A rundown Vet's club. Plush forty years ago.
Sticky floor, gum under tables, sawdust
on the dance floor. Nobody dancin'.

Two guys in the back shootin' snooker.
A little black man in a sharkskin suit,
a size too big, sits at the piano. He's been

told he sings like Satchmo. In his youth
he headlined for a well-known band.
The vets' wives ask him to do the one,

"You know, the one." He smiles, downs
a seven and seven, takes a long drag,
lays a burning Camel on the glass ashtray

piled high with butts. It's thirty years ago,
thirty-one. He's been headlining Fridays
and Saturdays at the VFW for the last five

years. Short order cook during the week.
Drinks on the house. Cardboard sign
taped to front door. His name in stencils.

This is my original work, unpublished. I am not representing any other board.

I am Siva Ramanathan and
Back Stage ' is my own original unpublished poem, and I am not representing any other group.
My email id is sivakamivelliangiri@gmail.come

Back Stage

For a child dropped in Sabhas
going backstage was the other part of life.

What seemed heavy was light
as card board, gold was foiled paper
the Raja Ranis wore silk or velvet.

In Kerala, backstage was grandiose.
I sat on the compound wall of Ammuma's house
the masked Gods diminished to mere men.
The story continued from midnight to dawn.

They said TSK had pebbles under his tongue
when he was Auvaiyar.

As a kid I watched Shivaji Ganesan saunter
in his 'Enga Mama' car
as I brushed my teeth
with Colgate tooth powder at the gate.

At work, his makeup man might dust pink on his skin.
The face albeit, he would give none.
Who could name the nerve that twitched
or the eye-brow that arched in surprise,
but he himself?

Siva Ramanathan

I hope Michael is okay. It’s getting late in the month. I’m honored my poem was nominated but I don’t think it’s a contender, but Kenneth’s is and possibly Siva’s.

Oh, I see that sometimes it’s been this late or later, so never mind. Don’t want to throw any negativity out there.

Yes Billy, Michael has not responded. Is it appropriate to send a personal message?
