Upcoming February IBPC 2019:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 30 Jan 2019, 02:04

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Normally I would try to pick three poems from three different poets
forgive me, but these I like the most:

1. Siva's Athenaeum

2. Bob's River Merchant

3. Bob's Mozart's Sister

I have seconded Meena's Pongal

I hope this is the correct procedure Michael.

I hope Siva will work on grammatical edits in case hers is chosen.
I have made one suggestion for your River Merchant Bob, it maybe
more British Engish than you like.

Bob Bradshaw

The 2 poems are my original
and unpublished work

I am not representing in the current IBPC.
I am listing both nominated poems. Whichever one is chosen, if selected, is fine with me...thx, Bob

The River Merchant

Sitting outside,
my dear wife visiting a sick friend
in Ku-to-yen, I will have to settle for the sight
of a waterfall in the distance
combing her gray hair in the dusk.
How I took my wife's voice for granted...
the days grow slower than moss without her.
Now there is only the river,
grumbling as another heron
studies its reflection.
Water swirls around a boulder,
moves on to the next one.
Bats stream from a cave somewhere,
as straggler bees one by one
turn towards home,
like horses from their meadow.
I am unbridled, able to wander
into any field,
but without a warm voice to return to
I have no urge to roam.
A family of monkeys chatters
in the trees. They are loud
as if they have been eating
fermented fruit. I raise
a wine cup, to share
in their good
fortune.

Mozart’s Sister, Heartbroken

Franz,
I have taken to my room, ill,
with an unimaginable headache.
Papa refuses to give us his consent...

I send you a thousand kisses.
I will always remember
my heart as a boat we shared,
how love's deep currents
stirred from unfathomable
depths.

I will one day forgive Papa,
but how can I understand
his selfishness?

Didn’t he marry who he loved?
Weren't Mama and Papa always
in each other's arms,
like flowering trees
grown so close to each other
their limbs embraced?

I second I Meena's poem "Pongal" and Frank's "Het Gele Huis"
I love both of Bob's poems, but I feel 'Mozart’s Sister, Heartbroken' has the edge - so I second that.

Meena
meenas17@gmail.com

"Pongal" is my original and unpublished one.

I am not representing in the current IBPC.

Pongal

Rejoice with gratitude,
a concept long cherished,
finds expression in a festival
known as Pongal..

It is in the courtyard. Sun's rays
flood. Floors display exquisite
drawings called Kolam.
Silver Lamps sparkle.

The brass stoves and pots
glitter with embellishments.
No modern gadgets are found.
Firewood gleams red.

The lady of the house
places the pot on the stove.
The sound of the conch
reverberates.

Milk boils and spills.
Beautiful! the fuming milk
on the shining red glow
looks picturesque.

Raw rice is steamed
along with desiccated coconut,
jaggery, ghee, cashew and raisins.
Cardamom is sprinkled.

Pongal, documents gratitude,
defines piety. The celebrations
take place to honour God,
one of fulfillment

Thanks for the nomination to all,

This is my original work
it has not been published before
and is not representing any other forum
on the IBPC this month. My e-mail address
is: ieuanaphywel@aol.com
This is my poem below:

Het Gele Huis
(The Yellow House)

My dream house begins
with a token fence
made from tempered bronze
that protects a box hedge
of yellow privet.

It sits under a permanent blue sky
with white cirrus clouds
that remind one of pillow-cased
foam on the azure of the Aegean Sea.

At the sunny front are doors
that lead to two shops
a hairdresser and a pet's shampoo parlour
they pay the rent and mortgage too.

Above the shops is a balcony
curved like a turreted bay.
I count my customers in and watch
them sparkle out as new people
with pampered, pomaded pets.

And if the tax man should call I'll greet
him from the side entrance and entertain
with a dainty Engelse Thee, creamed
scones and jam which I hope will satisfy
him and isn't too much to pay for me.
