Upcoming May IBPC 2019:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 29 Apr 2019, 07:35

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

8)

3/the poem is my original

4/and unpublished work

5/and I don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC.

Quasimodo

Taunts are hurled like stones
by boys and drunks. I duck many
because I'm stone deaf--from ringing bells.

People think that I'm dumb
when I don't respond, but I have
always known where to find peace.

The cathedral. Its walls of stone.
There the world's confusion calms,
as inevitably as a stirred drink settles.

Or it did before I carried Esmeralda
off to the belfry,
rescuing her from the gallows.

"Sanctuary! Sanctuary!" I shouted
to the pack of dogs below.
But even when I bring her an extra

blanket, a second cup of soup
she can't help turning away
seeing my deformity.

Why wouldn't a gypsy girl
fall for the pretty Captain Phoebus?
A dried creek bed isn't as shallow

as that ass. Who said the world's just?
I could bring apples in winter
to Esmeralda, the finest wines

from the Archdeacon's collection
and still my kindness
could not compete

with Phoebus’ flawless skin.
Against all logic my heart’s barricades
are overthrown by her presence.

Yet I remind myself over and over,
as if repeating a vow,
that it’s enough being near her.

Why do I lie to myself?
I will always be a leper
without a colony.

Thanks Bob
I accept of course, however
my personal preference would be: 'Not Really About Rooks'.
Michael will have to rule if it is eligible, and if anyone nominate it.

I second Bob's Quasimodo, best wishes with it Bob.

I don't think you can change a few words and try to sneak in a poem that already placed. Cagey imho

Beneath the integrity of the forum, if not the poet

For a Mad Son

You sit cross legged like a yogi
in my papasan chair, sifting
your beard between sips of tea,
tell me the moon was birthed
cut from the circle of earth,
the world is flat as a folding knife

When you were small, I built
a tree castle from repurposed
pallets, so high it raked the stars
like Babel's tower; pig Latin
coursing through your brain
even then , I passed if off
the way it never bothered you
how other kids rode bikes
played hide-and-seek, caught
lightning bugs in a jar.

Sometimes I break, curse God,
myself, the universe -and then
I'm secretly grateful to all
the pretty girls who will
never crush your heart;
the machinations of this world
cannot hurt you much.

Original work. Unpublished. No poem of mine represents another forum. ashworthken@yahoo.com

I hope my preference is not sneaky it is out there
in the open for all to see complete with the history
of the poem. I feel it is sufficiently different, I do
accept that the board will decide on suitability. Poets
are entitled their own views. As to integrity,
it isn't possible to plagiarise one's own work is it.
Maybe wishful thinking on my part to see it enter.

I do enjoy in tinkering with ones own poem, and
feel this is a better poem. but I bow to
the wishes of the board in this matter.

Let me put it this way Frank my first IBPC placement was in 2000. I've never seen anyone try to recycle a poem that already placed and submit it. Nor have I ever seen someone be nominated for one powm, then ask to be nominated for another instead.

Our peers decide. Your pig poem was nominated

Ken I nominated you a few months ago and you rejected the nom,
another poem of yours then went forward, other poets
rejected a nom and stated their preference and
another was substituted to meet their preference.

The rook poem is different to the crow poem, if no one agrees
then fine. I have accepted the nom from Bob and stated
a preference this has happened several times in the past.

And I am willing to accept the admin's ruling on this, its
no biggie, I just happen to think it is my best poem
I have written and vanity rules, we all like to win, yes.

It' not as if I am murdering poets on the sly, it's just a poem.
Thanks Bob
I accept of course,

I've been checking other forums,

it is quite common to see a poet thank the nominator
and then express a preference for another of his/her poem.

I also see reworked poems represented, sometimes several times.

I know Bernie worked on his magnificent Kobe poem for around
a year before the final draft which won a 3rd placing, my own
feeling was it was worth more.

This is my original work
it has not been published before
nor has it represented any other forum in the IBPC
past or present.
This is how I wish it to go forward
conditional on any final edits.

Innocence Lost

'Rosebud' - Last word of Citizen Kane

Screams resonated around the courtyard.
sharp as a pirate's knife
cutting through to the bone.
I'd heard those dreadful
sounds before.

Jack ordered them into the fray.
Rosie's squeals reaching a crescendo,
she ran blindly into the van trying
to shake her assailants off.

Finally they had her where they wanted.
Traumatised, she lay quietly on the straw,
worn out from fear, exhausted
from her exertions, pain throbbing
around her porcine ears and anus.

Bewildered, Rosie stares at Jack,
the man who had cared for her,
chatted to her in kindly tones
over the wall, and now . . .

The dogs scamper back seeking
tickled ears.
