No one believed it when he said
the moon snagged in the spire
of the St Augustine lighthouse.
Eight-hundred year old oaks, limbs so
long they made stilts to hold them so
they didn't drag the ground or break.
Matanzas means place of slaughter.
259 French soldiers were given the
choice between the Pope or death.
It's the oldest city in America and
any trolley driver will tell the story,
then drop you off at the Old Brewery
for a quick smoke and a six-dollar
Bratwurst with no onions, then it's
on to Castillo de San Marcos, made
entirely from crushed sea-shells,
quick-lime and sand. They tell me
Spain gave orders to conquer the
indigenous peoples for the sake of
their own Souls, for the Glory of God,
and The Holy Mother Church of Rome.

Interesting details throughout… This is a good travelogue and history lesson set around St. Augustine, a fascinating city. It’s always good to hear your voice.

As I said somewhere else this is a great poem, giving the readers so many things to question within themselves and ponder. And to inspire to seek Justice.

Thanks guys. I've as always been blown away that a city in America is rooted in Medieval Europe.

I’ve been to St Augustine. Don’t remember it very well. I was 9 or 10. But I do remember I got to hold an alligator’s mouth shut, pet it’s belly, and put it to sleep.

A great walk through history, interesting details, I like it all.
Sad how we destroy other people in the name of a King.
